Yesterday afternoon the kids and I had an experience of a lifetime… we took part in a release of Olive Ridley Turtles… The people at a resort nearby make note of nesting areas and watch and protect
these precio
us eggs… of course, I did wonder about how much impact we had in the handling of the little guys. They were so small yet, so very determined and strong. Tough little flapper feet working hard. It was important for them to crawl into the surf themselves. As they were set in the sand, they would pause for just a bit then scamper away. Only to be tossed back by a gentle wave. How nervous were we in the watching crowd when the little turtles were washed back up amongst our HUGE feet. We would all stand very still while they worked
their way back into the surf. (and hold our breath as we willed our children to STAND STILL! OK – I yelled at mine to stand still!!! But they got the message after the first wave
!)
The turtle nest numbers wax and wane from year to year. Last year this location had 18 nests, this year only three. We hope to make it with the boys to a “Turtle Walk” sponsored by a local turtle rescue group Friday evening… what an experience!!!!!
